Parenting Our Future

A 6 month online program for the parents, foster parents, and grandparents, and caregivers of Metis children.

Parenting Indigenous children is an important role in shaping our nation’f future. If you’re here, you’re likely realizing all of the cultural obligation that this important role holds.

Perhaps you have worked hard to keep your children involved in community, but are looking for additional resources and support to connect your children with their language, arts, and stories. Perhaps, you are new to parenthood and seeking support in finding ways to keep culture in your home. Or, perhaps you have welcomed Metis children into your home and family.

The Parenting our Future Program was created to support the parents and caregivers of Metis children like you to ensure your children stay connected to culture as they grow and understand themselves at Metis people. Parents who want to raise their children with the strength of their ancestors behind them, and with traditions that will keep them grounded. 

What Will The Metis Parenting Our Future Program Offer?

  • Online classes that you can access from your computer or phone anywhere in the world
  • Learn at your own pace and at times that are convenient to you
  • Interact with other parents and caregivers through our Parent’s Circle, our periodic Zoom Gatherings, and in our classes
  • Learn how to make important items for your child like their moccasins.
  • Learn how to make creative play items for your children like an octopus bag, a Metis “smoking hat”, a capote, mitasses.
  • Learn crafts to do with your children such as age appropriate beading projects, sewing skills, and other activities.
  • Access important parenting teachings
  • Learn some ways to connect your child with community
  • Learn how to prepare traditional foods to nourish yourself little ones

Is this program for you?

 This program is a good fit for you if…

  • You are are a parent, grandparent, or caregiver of Metis children
  • You are ready to learn, have access to a phone or computer and have access to the internet
  • You are searching for Metis culture opportunities for your children and want to bring culture into your home

This program is not for you if…

  • You want to learn these skills so you can sell moccasins and moss bags to mothers 
  • You have an elder in your life who can teach you all of these things. If this is the case, I HIGHLY encourage you to learn from them.
  • You are not able to interact with your circle. Even 10 minutes a day will bring so much reward in your experience.
  • You’re in a dire situtation. If you are currently leaving an abusive relationship, facing losing your home, or unable to financially support yourself, please focus on these. Your health and wellbeing comes first.

Cost

The cost for this 6 month program is 350.00 dollars. Fees can be divided into multiple payments on a payment plan leading up to the program.

We also have materials kits available and can mail you all of the materials for the classes in the program. Materials kits are an additional cost, however, you may also use materials from home using our materials lists.
