Description
Sharing culture happens in community. As we have navigated through societal realities of not being able to gather together, we adapted to allow for that sharing in new ways, online, from a distance. Although these methods have proven important in allowing us to connect with each other and welcome more of our kin home, gathering in person is critical. There is so much that we can only share in person.
With this in mind, I am inviting you to participate in a beautiful expression of community, of gathering together on the land, as families, to share culture.
This culture camp will bring together families to share, learn, pray, and build relationship with the land. Here is a brief outline of the camp;
- 5 days from July 31st – Aug 4th
- Near Perryvale AB in Northern Alberta
- Camping onsite (no power or water hookups)
- Tending to the land and building our relationship with it
- Children welcome
- Language and culture teachings shared each day
- All meals provided
- Arts circles (silk embroidery, porcupine quill plaiting, tufting, fish scale art) each day
- Potential for learning about medicines depending on weather
Registration required:
Although this camp is open to all Indigenous nations, much focus is given to Otipemisiwak and Nehiyaw traditions and we do ask that you register to join us. This will ensure we have enough space and can plan for meals.
Costs:
There are costs to hosting this that we as a community will have to cover. Fees are used to pay for foods, protocol, firewood, honouraria for elders and helpers, funds to support the facilities needed, materials, supplies. ).
Contributions to these costs can be made by either;
- Contributing 500 dollars each
- Helping us fund raise within the community
- Contributing in kind the things that are needed for the camp (physical support before the camp)
- Any combination there-of
